How much RAM do you need for gaming?
What 8GB, 16GB and 32GB actually get you in 2025 — and why the amount is only half of the question.

Short answer: 16 GB is the sensible target, 8 GB still works for a lot of games, and 32 GB helps a specific set of people rather than everyone.
What the published requirements say
Across our game database, the pattern is consistent:
- Games released before roughly 2019 typically ask for 8 GB at the recommended tier
- Games released since 2021 typically ask for 16 GB at the recommended tier, and a growing number ask for 16 GB at the minimum tier
- A small number of simulation-heavy titles recommend 32 GB

Why 8GB causes problems before it causes crashes
Running short on memory rarely produces a clean failure. What you get instead is:
- Stutter when loading new areas, as Windows pages data to disk
- Long initial load times, particularly on a mechanical drive
- Alt-tabbing becoming painful, because the browser and game are competing
Windows itself uses 2–3 GB before you open anything. A browser with a dozen tabs can easily take another 2–3 GB. That leaves noticeably less than 8 GB for the game.
Capacity is only half of it
Two things matter as much as the number of gigabytes:
Dual channel. Two 8 GB sticks are meaningfully faster than one 16 GB stick, because the memory controller can talk to both at once. On integrated graphics the difference is dramatic — often 30% or more — because the GPU is reading from the same memory. Check Task Manager's "Slots used" figure.
Speed and latency. On AMD's Ryzen platforms in particular, memory speed affects game frame rates measurably. DDR5-6000 with reasonable timings is the common sweet spot on AM5.
Who actually needs 32GB
- Anyone running creative applications alongside games — DaVinci Resolve and After Effects both recommend 32 GB on their own
- Streamers encoding in software while playing
- Players of heavily modded games — a large Minecraft or Skyrim modlist changes the calculation completely
- Simulation players: large Cities: Skylines II cities and late-game Factorio saves are memory-hungry
The practical recommendation
Buying now, 2×16 GB is the sensible default. If you already have 8 GB and are hitting stutters, adding memory is usually the cheapest meaningful upgrade you can make — but check your motherboard's supported type and speed first, and match kits where you can.
