What is a CPU bottleneck, and do you have one?

How to tell whether your processor or your graphics card is limiting your frame rate — and what to do about it.

A bottleneck simply means one component is finishing its work and waiting on another. Every system has one. The question is whether yours is in the right place for what you are doing.

The diagnosis takes two minutes

Open an overlay showing CPU and GPU utilisation while playing — most drivers include one, and Windows Game Bar (Windows + G) shows both.

  • GPU near 100%, CPU well below — GPU-limited. This is the healthy state for a gaming PC. To gain frames, lower graphics settings or upgrade the graphics card.
  • CPU near 100% on some cores, GPU well below — CPU-limited. Lowering graphics settings will change very little.
  • Neither near 100% — something else is the limit: a frame cap, V-Sync, thermal throttling, or a storage stall.

Why the answer changes with resolution

This is the part people miss. The same PC can be CPU-limited at 1080p and GPU-limited at 4K.

Raising the resolution increases the graphics card's work but leaves the processor's work essentially unchanged — the CPU is handling game logic, physics, draw calls and AI, none of which care how many pixels you are rendering. So the higher you go, the more the GPU becomes the limit.

The practical consequence: if you are CPU-limited at 1080p, buying a higher-resolution monitor genuinely can improve how "balanced" your system feels, because it moves the load onto the component with headroom.

What to do about it

If you are CPU-limited:

  • Check your memory configuration first. Single-channel memory, or memory running below its rated speed because XMP/EXPO is not enabled in BIOS, is a very common and completely free fix.
  • Lower CPU-side settings, not graphics ones — draw distance, crowd density, simulation quality.
  • Consider that a CPU upgrade often means a platform upgrade, since a new processor frequently needs a new motherboard and sometimes new memory. That changes the cost calculation substantially.
