Start with a processor and motherboard — socket compatibility is the check that catches the most expensive mistakes.
Socket compatibility
A processor only fits one socket. AM4 and AM5 are not interchangeable, and neither are LGA1700 and LGA1851. Older boards may also need a BIOS update for newer chips in the same socket.
DDR4 vs DDR5
Memory generation is fixed by the motherboard, not the CPU. Some processors support both, but any single board takes one or the other — the slots are physically keyed differently.
Graphics card clearance
Board-partner cards are frequently longer and thicker than the reference design. Always check the exact model dimensions, not just the chip name.
Power supply headroom
Modern graphics cards draw brief spikes well above their rated board power. Sizing for those transients, rather than for the average, is why recommended wattages look generous.
Cooler height and radiator size
A tall air cooler will not fit a small case, and radiator support depends on both length and thickness. Both are hard blockers rather than performance trade-offs.
What we cannot check
Memory QVL compatibility, exact PCIe lane allocation when several M.2 drives are fitted, and front-panel connector layouts. These need the specific board manual.
